Studying abroad

Marwa Mortaji, Morocco

One of the most observational aspects in today’s educational world is that, as time passes, there are more and more students who are willing to study abroad and their numbers are largely increasing. Many believe they have a chance at being successful if they finish their studies abroad, and that it also has many benefits for the students. They can learn many things throughout their studies including new culture, acquire new knowledge, meet new people and more. However, it is crucial for a student to study very hard if they want to be accepted in the wanted school, not to mention how they will benefit from it if they ever got there. Furthermore, they can build their foreign language skills and fluency, making their spoken and written foreign language better and easier to use. Moreover, people usually go through some steps to register for an education abroad, which will be explained in the next paragraphs along with the benefits of studying abroad and its advantages.

Maximize your chances

As mentioned, students who want to study abroad usually go through some steps before enrolling in the wanted university or school. First and foremost, they need to make sure they got good grades in order to get accepted by the school they want to get in. Some countries offer scholarships for students to help and encourage them into taking more steps forward, and the better your grades, the more chance you have to get accepted.

Secondly, after a year of hard work to ensure your acceptance, you’ll need to start searching for the place you want to study in and decide on what to study. Some people knew what they’re dreams and ambitions are, as well as what they want in life since they were young. Others discover that later on, during the middle of college years or high school. But for some, the decision is still not clear even after a long time of thinking and searching. For those who have yet to discover what they’re ambitions are, they can think about what they enjoy doing, and what they like to do even without any rewards, and go after that goal. You can also try to find that out by searching out for the modules offered by their prospective school, by revising other people’s interviews for different schools, or try to look up various job description, career paths, and opportunities available, and see what fits you the best. After starting the program search, when you find yourself in a difficult situation, and you are frustrated about what program to choose, try comparing between the ones you like, and keep in mind that you need to apply to as many schools as you can, and make sure you are applying to the ones with the major you want. Each program has a specific module and various academic goals. You need to be very careful before choosing, as there are cases where students regret their choice and, as a consequence, halfway through their first year they claim they’ve enrolled in the wrong degree.  At last, after finishing the steps people go through to study abroad, now we move on to talk about the benefits and the advantages of studying abroad.

Advantages of studying abroad

Initially, studying abroad can be a big improvement in your educational life, but also the best part of it. Study abroad challenges students to live among new types of people along with different conditions. Gilbert Keith Chesterton stated “The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one’s own country as a foreign land.” The culture and lifestyle will change and they will be very different and that will produce a cultural shock, which will make the students let their social skills grow in order to get assistance from lecturers, school staff classmates, as well as to make friends among their peers. Additionally, students will be able to obtain much benefit from the expansion of their communication skills in their future life. As a result, these students will be eager to acquire more knowledge as they get old and as they are able to cope in the situation. Laurence Sterne says “The desire of knowledge, like thirst of riches, increases ever with acquisition of it”. Moreover, this experience will make the students mature, gain confidence as well as build up self-esteem, and ultimately make them well-rounded persons, with a greater perspective of the world around them to appreciate societal differences.

One research showed that 95% of the students who were surveyed said that studying abroad served as a stimulant for increasing their maturity, 96% stated that their self-confidence increased, and 95% said it made them see the world in a whole new way. Besides, it will be a good opportunity to learn about a new culture and be part of it as well. This enriches the student’s knowledge as well as historical background, thud not only benefiting the other culture but one’s own as well, as students tend to look more into their past and learn more about their culture alongside with the new culture. Accordingly, the mentioned survey showed that 98% of the students stated that study abroad helped them better understand their own cultural values, and 94% stated that their study abroad experience continues to show how their interactions with new cultures impact their views of themselves.

Employability

On top of that, you can develop skills and experience that enable you to use them everywhere, and which can enhance your CV and be appealing to job interviews. Lastly, the survey showed that three-quarters of the respondents said that they acquired skills that influenced their future career paths. Companies are willing to hire students with a recommendation letter from foreign universities. Unsurprisingly, as many as 87% of the students said that studying abroad influenced their educational life in a good way. What’s more, studying in a different country offers many new activities and interests that you may have never heard of or experienced back home. You might find a new talent you didn’t know you had, as well as new methods of enjoying your time like hiking, festivals, aquariums, concerts, and there is more.

In conclusion, study abroad has many benefits. Firstly, there is the gain of new experiences. Students gain and learn many new things from life abroad. Secondly, it provides the opportunity to travel around the world and enjoy its sceneries. Students learn more as they travel around to gain more information about foreign countries and new cultures. Then, students develop personal skills by adapting to the situation abroad plus coping with the lifestyle in the foreign country, not to mention acquiring new memories and new friends along the way. Lastly, study abroad improves your opportunities at employment as well as job offers and makes a good recommendation to broaden your chances of getting a great job.
